Plan

  • Decide what veggies you want to plant, and how much of each.
  • Create a garden plan!  Use the tool linked here, or draw out your garden on paper, mapping out where each type of plant will go.

Prepare

Basil

If you started basil seeds indoors or purchased transplants, harden off and transplant now.  It is also time to plant basil seeds directly in the garden.

Beets

Beets are a semi-hardy vegetable. Beets do not transplant well. Plant beets directly in the garden.

Beans (Bush and Pole)

Beans are a tender vegetable that require lots of sunshine and warm temperatures to thrive. There are several types of beans–bush, pole, and dry. Beans do not transplant well. Plant beans directly in the garden.

Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe is a very-tender plant that cannot tolerate any frost or cold temperatures. To get a jump start, start seeds inside now. Otherwise, you can plant seeds directly in the garden in a few weeks.

Carrots

Carrots are a semi-hardy vegetable that grow best in cool weather with lots of sun.  Carrots do not transplant well. Plant seeds directly in the garden.

Carrot seeds take a long time to germinate, and need consistent watering until they do. It’s best to mist or use drip irrigation so you do not wash the carrot seeds away.

Chives

Chives are a cool-season herb. Whether you you started from seed or purchased transplants, chives can be hardened off and transplanted now.

Cilantro

If you started cilantro seeds indoors or purchased transplants, harden off and transplant now.  It is also time to plant cilantro seeds directly in the garden.

Corn

Corn is a tender vegetable that grows best in full sun. It does not transplant well. Plant corn directly in the garden. Corn needs to be at least 3 rows deep to pollinate well.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are a tender vegetable that grows best in full sun. To get a jump start, start seeds inside now. Otherwise, you can plant seeds directly in the garden in a few weeks.

Dill

If you started dill seeds indoors or purchased transplants, harden off and transplant now.  It is also time to plant dill  seeds directly in the garden.  This herbrequires light to germinate, so don’t plant it too deep in the soil.

Lettuce

Lettuce is a semi-hardy vegetable that grows best in cool weather or partial shade during the summer. Plant seeds directly in the garden or harden off and move transplants into the garden. To have a continuous harvest, don’t plant all the lettuce at once. Instead plant a square or two (4-8 plants) every 2 weeks.

Oregano

If you started oregano seeds indoors or purchased transplants, harden off and transplant now.  It is also time to plant oregano seeds directly in the garden.

Radishes

Radishes are a hardy vegetable that grows best in cool weather. It does not transplant well. Plant radish seeds directly in the garden.

Rosemary

If you started rosemary seeds indoors or purchased transplants, harden off and transplant now.  Rosemary is a difficult herb to grow from seed. Instead, purchase transplants, which are often made from cuttings instead of grown from seed.

Spinach

Spinach is a hardy vegetable that grows best in cool weather. Plant spinach directly in the garden as soon as the ground is 40 degrees (not frozen) and you are able to work the soil.

Summer Squash (includes Zucchini)

Summer squash and zucchini are tender vegetables that grow best in full sun. To get a jump start, start seeds inside now. Otherwise, you can plant seeds directly in the garden in a few weeks.

Thyme

If you started thyme seeds indoors or purchased transplants, harden off and transplant now.

Watermelon

Watermelon is a very-tender plant that cannot tolerate any frost or cold temperatures. To get a jump start, start seeds inside now. Otherwise, you can plant seeds directly in the garden in a few weeks.
