Frost is no longer a concern, but soon warm temperatures will be. In deciding if/what to plant, consider the following:

1. Cool-weather plants like peas, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, etc. may not grow well in the middle of the summer due to high temperatures. Depending on how long your season is, you may be able to plant these later in the summer for a fall harvest.

2. For warm weather plants, make sure you have enough days left in the growing season to harvest before frost sets in. The seed packet or plant information should tell you how many days until harvest. Count backwards to ensure you have enough time.

I’ve included some plants on the list that generally grow well in the summer and harvest in a short amount of time.

Basil

It is time to plant basil seeds directly in the garden.

Beans (Bush and Pole)

Beans are a tender vegetable that require lots of sunshine and warm temperatures to thrive. There are several types of beans–bush, pole, and dry. Beans do not transplant well. Plant beans directly in the garden.

Beets

Beets are a semi-hardy vegetable. Beets do not transplant well. Plant beets directly in the garden.

Carrots

Carrots are a semi-hardy vegetable that grow best in cool weather with lots of sun.  Carrots do not transplant well. Plant seeds directly in the garden.

Carrot seeds take a long time to germinate, and need consistent watering until they do. It’s best to mist or use drip irrigation so you do not wash the carrot seeds away.

Chives

Chives are a cool-season herb. Whether you you started from seed or purchased transplants, chives can be hardened off and transplanted now. You can also plant chives directly in the garden now.

Cilantro

It is time to plant cilantro seeds directly in the garden.

Dill

It is time to plant dill seeds directly in the garden.  This herbrequires light to germinate, so don’t plant it too deep in the soil.

Lettuce

Plant lettuce seeds directly in the garden. To have a continuous harvest, don’t plant all the lettuce at once. Instead plant a square or two (4-8 plants) every 2 weeks.

Radishes

Radishes are a hardy vegetable that grows best in cool weather. It does not transplant well. Plant radish seeds directly in the garden.
